Vahru Sonavane’s acclaimed poetry collection, Godhad (Hindi: गुदड़ी), has now been translated into English, marking a pivotal moment for First Nations literature in India. Originally published in Bhilori-Marathi and later translated into Hindi as Pahad Hilne Laga Hai, the collection’s continued relevance led to its reprint in 2023, followed by this English edition. Vahru Da’s poetry vividly portrays the struggles of the Bhil Adivasi community in Maharashtra, weaving their voices into the broader fabric of indigenous resistance. Unlike conventional narratives, his work reflects a movement shaped by both communist influences and Adivasi leadership, akin to Maharashtra’s distinct First Nations movement. Inspired by Ambarsing Maharaj’s call to action, Vahru Da became a pioneering labor rights activist, while his poetry remained deeply rooted in his First Nations identity.
